In contrast to his previous international school in Tokyo, which adamantly opposed any kind of acceleration in math/STEM classes, at OHS our son has been able to take classes based purely on his ability, not his age. As most of the instructors have PhDs and are often involve students in their research, the quality of the teaching has generally been fantastic. Our son says that, due to the advanced academic backgrounds of the other students, class discussions with peers are also more significantly more dynamic, interactive and interesting than in his previous brick-and-mortar school. 8. #7 Best Private High Schools in AmericaThe Nueva SchoolHillsborough, CA·Private School·PK, K-12·Rating 4.53 out of 5 75 reviewsParent: Having three children attend Nueva from 2004-present, we’ve seen the school evolve from a small PreK-8 to a multi campus PK-12 school. Despite the changes over the years, the overall mission of the school - to serve gifted learners within a caring community - has remained constant. I cannot point to a more dedicated and generous parent group, or more wonderful, unique, (quirky!) caring teachers and staff. Negatives: extremely competitive nature of the students, lack of diversity, and the amount of privilege apparent in the population. Talk to any ex-faculty member about this and they will definitely agree - entitled kids are not easy to teach.... Our teen *loves* going to school–they come home excited about the book they’re reading, the challenging computer science problem before them and the era of history they’re studying. We have been pleased by how accessible and supportive teachers have been to our teen outside of class when they have needed additional help and our teen’s advisor has provided incredible support around academics, activities and navigating the teen years–meeting one-on-one on a weekly basis. I do sense that not every new student had the same experience in making new friends as my son did, but I think that would be the case in any new school environment. The one opportunity for the school to attract more diverse candidates - many Asian and Indian groups are represented, but other groups are an opportunity.Academics: there was about 1 hour of homework 4 days a week, and a focus on quizzes/assignments and team projects, rather than massive final tests.Community: spirit week, celebrate pingry, orientation week with a sleepover in the Pottersville campus all help to foster community. 12. #11 Best Private High Schools in AmericaRiverdale Country SchoolBronx, NY·Private School·PK, K-12·Rating 4.4 out of 5 83 reviewsParent: Riverdale really is a remarkable school. They are somehow able to help nurture kids who are nice, well rounded but also successful and enjoy learning. It is definitely rigorous but isn't the pressure cooker that other NYC schools are. The new administration is also great (I was concerned about that since I really liked the old one) and they are taking a proactive and thoughtful approach to things like discouraging/minimizing kids use of cell phones and social media which I think will lead to a huge improvement in the kids overall well-being and mental health. The school is also ideologically, and not just racially diverse and this diversity hasn't led to an obsession over the color of our kids skin (and I say this as a parent of a biracial child) and they have really struck a great middle ground with inclusion/equity without indoctrination. I am sure that I would do well at my home high school, but would there be a community where I would feel support? The Hotchkiss School has small classes with individualized instruction. The campus community is diverse. There are co-curricular programs (for me Varsity Soccer in Fall and hiking, theater and dance in Spring) and numerous clubs. When I was looking for a club that did not exist, an Advisor worked with students to develop the materials needed. I even studied abroad!I learned how to organize my days with help from Hotchkiss' "The Learning Center." While each day is very busy and even demanding, I have free time to meet up with friends. 16. #15 Best Private High Schools in AmericaHorace Mann SchoolBronx, NY·Private School·PK, K-12·Rating 4.32 out of 5 153 reviewsParent: A current HM parent whose child joined 9G, I had big expectations that have been exceeded. I expected the school to nurture our child's intellectual potential, it is the manner in which this has been cultivated that is impressive -- the depth of critical discussions (feels like college-level engagement), feedback for growth, and a deeply personal and caring network of support from student advisers to social and academic issues is intentional, accessible and thoughtful. The school deserves its STEM reputation, not just due to faculty, facilities and rigor, but equally because of the curiosity-driven and creative space teachers bring to the experience. One thing for HM to change is to bring more prominence to more sports that student athletes do well in, from waterpolo to fencing and field hockey etc. Sports and teamwork are also part of the HM equation but are sometimes overlooked.... She has developed a diverse group of close friends, and she has loved her teachers. As her parents, we required her to take Mandarin starting in 6th grade (one of the only things we've ever required her to do against her will), and she has absolutely loved her Mandarin teacher and the language as a result. Similarly, she disliked Math going into 6th grade, but now she loves her two math teachers and the subject. Castilleja provides an incredible education beyond traditional education. Casti teaches girls how to learn, how to manage their time, how to self advocate, executive functions, SEL, and how to behave socially. In addition, teachers and administration constantly focus the culture on the school's core values: Courage, Conscience, Courtesy, Charity, and Character. 20. #19 Best Private High Schools in AmericaCrystal Springs Uplands SchoolHillsborough, CA·Private School·6-12·Rating 4.43 out of 5 51 reviewsSenior: Crystal is definitely a humanities-focused school. The English and history programs are very demanding, and the honors-level classes require significant time and effort to excel. It's small, so a proportional number of classes is expected, but a large share of the electives are concentrated in the history and English departments. The STEM side is much more limited and mandatory CS classes for underclassmen are a joke. You will also choose very few of your classes until senior year. While there are a small number of teachers known as ones to avoid, the majority of teachers are very knowledgeable and approachable. Poor administration in areas such as food (as they continually negotiate the contract down) and a commitment to wasting time with endeavors like DEI and various mandatory meetings detract from the school's academic mission. 25. #23 Best Private High Schools in AmericaTrinity SchoolNew York, NY·Private School·K-12·Rating 3.98 out of 5 83 reviewsAlum: As a recent alum, who has had the privilege to endure thirteen years of this wonderful institution, I unreservedly recommend Trinity. To put it simply, Trinity’s academics are unparalleled; I was beyond prepared for the rigorous college I attend. The vast majority of teachers, especially the older ones are noticeably passionate, committed to their students’ education, and genuinely inspiring. My peers are likewise contagiously motivated, friendly, social, and bright. I’ll admit Trinity is incredibly challenging—sometimes mischaracterized as competitive—but it is incredibly rewarding and intellectually enriching. Do not pass up an opportunity to study at this institution.... 26. #24 Best Private High Schools in AmericaDwight Global Online SchoolWest Palm Beach, FL·Online School·6-12·Rating 4.9 out of 5 202 reviewsFreshman: Dwight offers several ways to engage in community activities, social events, pursue 'sparks of genius' and learn academically. The school is always growing in the programs it offers that meet students' interests and/or careers. To name only a few, Dwight offers ways to participate in national/international competitions, performing in concerts and plays, to meet with guest speakers in assemblies. Lastly, but certainly not least importantly, Dwight Global has an evolving system for academics that is flexible in terms of workload and attendance (to help our large pool of students that pursue demanding interests outside of school). All in all, it has been a great experience for me!...
