Denmark's Thomas Delaney, speaking after the match, said: "Throughout the game we worked our way into it and then suddenly it is my little toe offside and then the handball. It goes fast in modern football with VAR.

"For us Danes it is the pride of wearing the jersey it is always emotional and it is more emotional than the average game.

"We didn't give back a victory to the fans and the families at home - that is a tough one."

Denmark have failed to win any of their last eight games at major competitions (drawn four, lost four), with their last win in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 against the Czech Republic, 2-1.

They then lost 2-1 against England in the semi-final, as I'm sure most England fans will remember!

An exceptional talent and still only 21 years old, Germany international Jamal Musiala is one of those rare footballers who makes playing the game at the highest level look effortlessly easy.

Analysing his game, with the help of more than 70 clips put together by The Athletic, is a fascinating experience, not least because of the way in which Musiala explains his decision-making on the pitch.

We learn about how he “plays” with his marker to escape pressure, where and when he wants the the ball, and why “La Croqueta” – his signature move – features in so many of those mesmerising dribbles.

This is Jamal Musiala’s game in his words. Read our piece below!

After Antonio Rudiger, the Germany defender, was named man-of-the-match, UEFA's Technical Observer Panel said: "He was really solid, winning a lot of duels all game long. He was especially strong in the air and also accurate with the ball."

Two old stagers battle on

Tonight, 38-year-old Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made his 38th appearance at a major competition, the joint-most for Germany alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger.

If he doesn't get injured, he should break that record in the quarter-final against either Spain or Georgia. This was also his 19th appearance at the Euros, taking him beyond Schweinsteiger's record of 18.

Plus, veteran midfielder Toni Kroos, 34, has announced he will retire after the tournament. So this would have been his last ever match if Germany had lost. But he rolls on at least one more time...

Jamal Musiala, the young star

Germany attacker Jamal Musiala, at the age of 21, is the second-youngest player to score three European Championship goals in one tournament after England's Wayne Rooney, who was 18.

Rudiger excellent throughout

To underline what Seb said, Antonio Rudiger has just been announced by UEFA as the official player of the match.

It's a relative novelty for them to give the award to a central defender, but they've got that one right. He was excellent.

Tough for Denmark to swallow

That is a tough result for Denmark to swallow. They did what they needed to in the first half by absorbing pressure for the first 20 minutes and then growing into the game.

Joachim Andersen’s nightmare five-minute spell decided the outcome but Rasmus Hojlund will feel frustrated he did not take any of the three great chances he had.

When the sadness subsides, thoughts might turn to the future of head coach Kasper Hjulmand.

Denmark have now failed to win a game at their last two tournaments and he will be under pressure even if there is no shame in being eliminated in the knockout stage by the hosts.

Super save Schmeichel!

90+5' Germany 2-0 Denmark

Poor old Denmark, poor old Schmeichel. They've thrown men forward to try to salvage a late goal, and Germany have counter-attacked them with such pace.

Wirtz carried it really well, a three-on-two, fed it left to Kai Havertz, who took it forward, free shot on goal, aimed towards the bottom-right corner...

Very good stop with an outstretched leg from Kasper Schmeichel, who arguably doesn't deserve to be on the losing side today. Though Manuel Neuer, the Germany goalkeeper, hasn't been bad either...

Is this 3-0, now?

Niclas Fullkrug and Florian Wirtz, the Germany subs, blast their way through, and Wirtz chips it daintily, cheekily, over the advancing Kasper Schmeichel and into the back of the net despite the despairing sliding clearance attempted by Maehle on the line.

But the flag goes up. VAR checking...
