never will recover from her vegetative state RALEIGH (AP) Through research with baby pigs North Carolina State University scien tists have gathered some new information about one of the most common and in some parts of the world one of the most serious ailments of human infants diarrhea A team of NC State animal scientists and microbiologists headed by Dr James Lecce has identified a virus as one of the causes of diarrhea that fre quently is fatal in baby pigs The virus which is relatively new to science is tentatively called It is the same virus that re cently has been connected with diarrhea in calves horse foals lambs laboratory mice and hu man babies There is strong indication Lecce said that rotovirus may be unversally present and a contributor to diarrhea in the newborn of most mammals Diarrhea is a major cause of death of human infants in de veloping nations In India 14 million infants die annually from noncholera diarrhea The ailment also accounts for a sub stantial number of deaths in the industrial West Lecce and fellow NC State agricultural researchers Margaret King and William Dorsey compiled their in formation on rotavirus while working on the development of an artificial rearing system for Pigs Using the Autosow a device designed by Lecce and other NCSU scientists the re searchers wean pigs at a day of age and feed them in the Auto sow under sanitary conditions comparable to those of a hospi tal They found that in the first group of pigs placed in the nursery the colostrum (first milk) protected pigs from rotavirus and there was no prob lem with diarrhea even though rotavirus was present But diarrhea began to show up with succeeding groups of pigs going through the Autosow nursery and the severity of the ailment progressively in creased The first symptoms showed up with the eighth group of pigs As additional litters were moved in after five to seven weeks of continuous operation diarrhea became more pro nounced After nine weeks of con tinuous operation the pigs were severely affected after two to four days in the Autosow They became dehydrated and were dead by 10 days of age Lecce said the same cycle was observed with different lit ters six times over a two year period In view of Lecce's research with pigs in the Autosow the data on human infants suggests that the virus is widespread and the viral dose increases due to crowding decreased ventila tion continuous use of nurseries and the absence of protection provided in the mother's milk proceedings police say Hernando Williams 23 of Chi cago opened the trunk and spoke with the victim before closing it and returning to court where his case was continued The victim was Linda Gold stone 29 who had been reported makeshift plywood last Tuesday after firemen removed a bedroom
