It is with broken hearts that we announce the loss of our Mom and Baba Anne Shumyk on January 21, 2023, at the age of 90 years.

Anne was born on the family farm just outside of Winnipegosis, MB on March 16, 1932 to Pauline and Nick Flysak.
Anne met the love of her life Steve Shumyk and they were married on May 31, 1952. They started their married life in Vancouver, BC and they were blessed with their first daughter, Bernice Anne in February 1957. When Anne’s mom took ill, they packed up and moved back to Winnipegosis, MB. They were then blessed with the birth of their son David Steven and with the birth of their daughter Karen Rose, their family was complete. Anne shared a special bond with her children and they spent their lunch breaks with their Mom daily. Even though David worked away, they spent countless hours on the phone during his times away and she would always ask “How long until David comes home?”

Anne was a housekeeper for many people in town, cleaned rooms at the local motel but became a legend through her catering and cooking skills. She catered every wedding, funeral and special occasion in the area always keeping track of them in a scribbler noting the menu and the weather that day. Eventually putting her catering business on the backburner in 1984, Anne chose a career in homecare and achieved her Home Care Attendant certificate from the Red River Community College. It was as if she knew her husband would need her care when he took sick in 1985. Anne was a compassionate homecare worker and was truly appreciated by each family for the care she gave.

Anne’s grandchildren, Shannon, Charisse and Brent were her world after the passing of her husband Steve in 1985. She made sure that childcare was never an issue and would pick them up from school every day and they have many fond memories of watching cartoons after school with Baba while enjoying her delicious homemade food or special treats from the Hotel or Red Sea in Winnipegosis. They also spent many hours with her in the garden or helping water her flowers which were always so beautiful. When the grandchildren were grown up, Anne was blessed with 4 great-grandchildren: Drayson, Emily, Nolan and Hannah. Family was the most important thing to Anne and it showed in the dedication and sacrifices she made for all of us without hesitation.

In Anne’s retirement years she spent countless days at the 60 and Over Club, Elks Hall and New Horizon Centre helping out in the kitchen or wherever help was needed. She was awarded a life-time membership and certificate of appreciation for all of her dedicated service to the centre. Anne also enjoyed playing Bingo in Sifton, Valley River, Winnipegosis and Fork River and even had a special spot at each that everyone knew was “Mrs. Shumyk’s” spot.

Religion was very important to Anne, and she never missed mass on Sunday until the point where her mobility would not allow her to attend in person. She always had her Bible on the table and would be found reading it in the early morning light before her walks or late at night before she said her prayers.

Anne will always be remembered as someone who wore a smile everywhere she went. Her hair was always perfectly curled and she greeted everyone with a kind “Hello, how are you?” Anne was someone everyone could turn to if they ever needed anything. I am very certain she didn’t know the meaning of the word “No”, a trait she passed on to her children and her grandchildren. Her favorite chair may now be empty by the window, but the memories and legacy she has left will live on in the countless lives she’s touched over her lifetime.

Anne is survived by her children Bernice (Larry), David and Karen (Ervin). Grandchildren Shannon, Charisse (Tony) and Brent (April). Great-grandchildren Drayson, Emily, Nolan and Hannah as well as nieces and nephews.

Anne was predeceased by her parents, husband Steve, sister Ella, brother Lucas, brother-in-law Mike and Paul, sister-in-law Jessie and Josephine.

Should friends so desire, donations in memory of Anne may be made to Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church or The Winnipegosis & District Health Centre - Transitional Care.
